The healthy artist is fully present and aware whilst striving to live a life of cultivation and alignment.

People who are authentic experience life through active, spontaneous engagement. Osho describes creativity as the "greatest rebellion." Societal conditioning and its repressive force makes it difficult to live a life of creative spontaneity. It blocks the flow of creativity and expression and thus makes us sick. The sickness described is disease = dis - ease, the kind of unwell feeling that comes about when one is not at ease within oneself.

"People who are healthy are creative. Creativity is a fragrance of real health. When a person is really healthy and whole, creativity comes naturally to him, the urge to create arises." p1. Creativity : Unleashing the Forces Within (Osho, Insights for a New Way of Living

Artists actively seek Presence. They work towards a state whereby they can accept their whole being into the creative process. Osho makes the point that any life lived fully will be creative. He talks of the three C's of creativity.

  • Consciousness ...this has to do with being,
  • Compassion ...has to do with feeling,
  • Creativity ...has to do with action
  • The artist who can develop these three qualities simultaneously becomes three dimensional and has a quality of depth. This makes both the artwork/creative work and the life of the artist inspiring.

In "Something Odd About The Arts" I talk about the need for self management within the artistic arena. This need to 'manage' implies that the road to authenticity can be a rocky one. Osho describes the obstacles or blocks to creativity

  • Self-Consciousness the opposite of which is Flow.
  • Perfectionism the opposite of which is self acceptance.
  • Intellect the opposite of which is intelligence.
  • Belief the opposite of which is open-mindedness
  • The Fame Game the opposite of which again is self acceptance and acceptance of others.
  • Four Keys are offered that can unlock creative potential.

  • Become a Child Again
  • Be Ready To Learn
  • Find Nirvana in the Ordinary
  • Be A Dreamer
  • These qualities would come about for those who live intentionally. To help the Artist remain aligned Osho asks four questions.

    They are about

  • Memory and Imagination Do you live in the NOW?
  • Postpartum Depression Do you look for esteem from without?
  • Creativity and Cross Breeding Do you exercise all of your intelligences?
  • The Art of Money Do you understand money as a form of energy exchange?
