Stephen - I too love to divine the origins of songs - I recently reaearched the origin of The Raggle Taggle gypsies Oh - just because I had to know - I was curious.
My daughter is 15 and a singer - she hopes to study at Westminster Uni - Trinity - Song and composition - I will have fun debating with her about Waltzing Matilda and passing on to her Voice Tutor.
I also researched Folk Song origin in our area of the moors only to find a famous song collector had visited here and taken down some songs! (Baring-Gould was his name!)
Songs are a potted history/sociology of populations (so many articles....so little time......)
Thanks again
(Matilda what if any is connection with the queen Matilda of England?

Hello Jo,
I am very sorry for missing your post six months ago! I should try to make more time to follow discussions.
I'm glad you enjoyed the article. The topic is something that still fascinates me. Their raising of the song to the status of a virtual national anthem just confirms that Australians are a weird mob! I'm not condemning it, mind you, just remarking on the apparent uniqueness of the Australian
style of patriotism in the world context.
I'm afraid I'm not sure what you meant about the drawings, though it sounds like an interesting offer!

Hi Stephen
I am finding it hard to find my way back to the article.
I think I meant that if you wanted me to draw some cartoons of the Jolly Swag Man etc I would be happy to,
Nice to chat!
